Boreholes across the northern hemisphere has confirmed that permafrost throughout polar and sub-polar regions is thawing, reports the Arctic Sounder.

Oil companies have spent 5 billion EUR on exploration drillings in the Barents Sea since the area was opened. However, the only gas or oil fields of economic interest which are found are the Snøhvit and Goliat fields.
