The polar bear agreement
Based on the 1973 Agreement on Polar Bears among the five range states (Canada, Denmark/Greenland, Norway, the Soviet Union/Russia, and the United States), this arrangement has fostered cooperation in managing polar bears sustainably. Notable aspects of the arrangement include the development of the Polar Bear Specialist Group under the auspices of IUCN and the addition of sub national elements to the arrangement like the 1988 Inuvialuit-Inupiat Polar Bear Management Agreement in the Southern Beaufort Sea.
